  1. A magnetic compass is a device for 
  2. determining the direction of the horizontal 
  3. component of the Earth's magnetic field. It 
  4. consists of a magnetized needle with its 
  5. north-seeking pole clearly indicated, pivoted 
  6. so that it can turn freely in a plane 
  7. parallel to the surface of the Earth (in a 
  8. horizontal circle). These are helpful for 
  9. sailors, walkers and other travellers, to 
  10. find their direction.
